Welcome to the Hispanic Heritage Storytelling Project

The project

The history of coffee and the traditions surrounding it are vast and deep. The way in which coffee is prepared and served is unique from culture to culture and, more specifically, from family to family. Distinct memories surrounding the making and serving of coffee are rooted in tradition, family, nostalgia, and are precise in smells, colors, warmth, and feelings in a way that is explicit, relatable, and beautiful to each individual. Our goal for this storytelling project is to capture and showcase Hispanic coffee memories that celebrate the diversity of traditions within Hispanic cultures while keeping these stories within the scope of this delicious drink that we all enjoy. This Coffee Storytelling Project is an ongoing project where stories will be collected, edited, and then shared during Raíces Creativas events, on social media, and (hopefully) beyond! Could this project be the start of something larger and more impactful? Hopefully! The beauty is that we will get to find out together!

How to share your story with us

Join Andrea, the owner of Elementary Coffee co. and Emil Rodriguez-Powell the owner of Slice of Lime Photography and co-owner of Source Creative House, in sitting down in front of a camera and sharing with us on film your own nostalgic memories, family traditions, and preparation rituals surrounding coffee. We will be filming and shooting photographs during various pop up locations. Stay tuned for details!

Filming will be limited to anyone who identifies as Hispanic and will take place in 20 minute intervals. Come dressed and ready to chat about your memories. If you have any coffee brewing instruments or cultural memorabilia that could enhance your story, please bring it along!

Be inspired! Check out this list of questions / prompts to help you recall your coffee memories and traditions:
